The Citizens of Nazi Germany "Thought They Were Free": A Brief Review and Analysis of Milton Mayer's Classic Book

Nazi Germany, under Hitler, has become accepted, in modern times, justified or not, as the epitome of an evil, tyrannical government.  Growing up we would all hear, in America at least, about the terrible things the Nazis did to the Jews, and others.  Thank God, we all thought, or learned to think, that America came in and saved the "good people" during World War 2, or else Hitler would have taken over the world, and we would all be speaking German right now, those of us who would have survived anyway!  Older, and aware of propaganda, I now realize that wars are often atrocious on ALL sides, and usually arise off of the basis of "old men lying", and lead to "young men dying", as the old expression notes.  With that said, there does seem to have been an extreme brutality carried out by the Nazi regime, on their enemies.  The images of starving human beings in a Nazi concentration camp, or the videos of whole families being shot in a pit, ready for immediate burial, can be haunting.  One question that would always come to my mind, when hearing, or seeing, stories like this, is, what could make these people so evil, and how could a whole country full of people support a government like this?

They Thought They Were Free by Milton Mayer attempts to answer the question of how and why 'decent men' became Nazis (National Socialists).  Published in 1955, Mayer interviews ten former Nazis, in Germany, after the fall of Hitler's regime, in an attempt to understand what their mind state was before, during, and after National Socialism, and try to comprehend how they could let the evil that took place, happen.

The ultimate conclusion seems to be that everything happened in such small steps, and with the right amount of propaganda, that nobody really seemed to notice the big change that was occurring in their society.

In the beginning, after a spark of antisemitism began to kindle in Germany, Jews began getting rounded up for their own "protection", and nobody seemed to really care, or notice.  A newspaper titled Kronenberger Zeitung, published an article dated November 11, 1938, at the bottom of page four, under a very small headline reading "Protective Custody", which stated:
"In the interest of their own security, a number of male Jews were taken into custody yesterday.  This morning they were sent away from the city."
Mayer had shown this newspaper article to each one of the ten former Nazis that he was interviewing, and not one of them recall hearing about this event, or anything like it.

This level of ignorance by the citizens, in important affairs that are taking place, in their society, is unnerving, but should not come as a surprise to anyone, at least anyone living in America.  The vast majority of Americans could not tell of specific violations of human rights that are being carried out by their own government, of which there are many.  Most Americans, I would think, do not even know that the current President of the United States, Barack Obama, has assassinated American citizens.  When you are not looking for the truth in government affairs, or of anything, for that matter, you will not find it.

It is important to note that many people became Nazis, not because they generally agreed with the principles of National Socialism, but it was a way of getting ahead in German society, to be a part of "the party".  If you were German, you didn't necessarily have to become a Nazi, but by not doing so, you accepted that you would never get promoted in your job, and lose out on other privileges.

When Mayer pressed his interviewees on why they didn't do more to stop the atrocities, they would ask, "What would you do?".  Touche.  Mayer understands the complexity of the situation, and chronicles, excellently, in the book, how it would be difficult for one person to know what was really going on, never the less do something about it.

At the time of this book's publishing (1955), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) was a fairly new organization in America, and Mayer makes a frightening comparison:
"The Federal Bureau of Investigation, with its fantastically rapid development of a central record of an ever increasing number of Americans, law-abiding and lawless, is something new in America.  But it is very old in Germany, and it had nothing to do with National Socialism except to make it easier for the Nazi government to locate and trace the whole life-history of any and every German."
Other interesting topics discussed in They Thought They Were Free:

  • Even the fire fighters became militarized, and became branches of the SA, or police departments.  They became "fire-fighting police"!
  • People eventually didn't feel comfortable discussing politics in Germany.
  • Overtime, Nazi Sunday-morning services began to replace the church.
There is obviously much more discussed in the actual book, and of course, at a greater depth.  The only critique I have of the book is that Mayer, at times, gives his opinion of certain things, that I do not entirely agree with.  Also, in small instances throughout the book Mayer seems to indicate that he is some sort of secret government agent, operating in Germany.  One such passage caught my attention, when referring to the ten former Nazis that he was interviewing, Mayer states:
"I did lie to all ten of them on two points: on the advice of my German colleagues and friends, I did not tell them that I was a Jew; nor did I tell them that I had access to other sources of information about them than my private conversations with them." [emphasis added]
Mayer never does elaborate on what his "other sources of information" were, which leaves this topic open for speculation.

I do not pretend to be an expert on Nazi Germany, therefore I can't get into a debate on how accurate a picture this book paints of the times, and the people.  As my knowledge of history increases, I will likely benefit from another reading of this work, understanding more of the wars, and people, mentioned throughout, though I do not think a major understanding of world history is needed to grasp the main point of this book, and highly recommend it to everyone.

Homeland Security Is The Reason Local Police Cars Are Converting To Black & White

The Berlin, CT Police Dept. unveiled a "new style" of police car last year.
Have you been noticing the police vehicles in your local town, city, county, or state, switching over to a black and white color scheme?

This is a change that has been taking place in Connecticut, for some time now.  The newest style of police cars, in every town, or city, I drive through, seems to have the same look; black and white color scheme, the word "POLICE" in big letters, and the name of the city/town in small letters.

"Woodbury Police Department purchases two new cars." - WoodburyCT.org

There has been questions as to whether this is a coordinated effort, and if so, for what purpose.

Evidence seems to indicate that the Department of Homeland Security is behind this standardization of police cars.

In Santa Fe, New Mexico, where both the city police, and the Sheriff's office, have returned to traditional black-and-white markings on police squad cars and SUVs, the Police Chief, Ray Rael, said last year, when his department began phasing in the black-and-white color scheme, that the design was chosen because of a federal Department of Homeland Security recommendation to standardize police vehicles around the country.

Also in New Mexico, the Albuquerque Police Department switched to black and white police cars, and, in a news briefing, said they were "making the change in part due to recommendations from Homeland Security that all law enforcement go to black and white cars."  From this same briefing, it continues, "The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Department, the State Police and APS police all have black and white cars."

(Update: 11/09/13:  The City of Albuquerque has since taken this story off of its official website, and is seemingly unavailable anywhere else online.  When attempting to find this news briefing, a Google search of "Albuquerque Police Homeland Security" only revealed a recent story of Homeland Security raiding, and searching, the home of an Albuquerque Police Officer.)

Recent testimony given by Retired Marine Col. Pete Martino, at a public meeting in the city of Concord, New Hampshire, may be able to help us further understand why Homeland Security would be standardizing our local police.  (video below)

Col. Martino came to speak out against the city of Concord, purchasing an armored tank, funded by Homeland Security.  (In its grant application to the DHS, the police department stated that they need to protect against the threat from pro-liberty domestic groups, like the Sovereign Citizens, Free Staters and Occupy New Hampshire.)

Col. Martino warns:
"What's happening here is we're building a domestic military because it's unlawful and unconstitutional to use American troops on American soil. So what we're doing is building a military."
Martino also addresses the militarization, and standardization, of police, and police equipment:
"My best friend, who is a SWAT officer in Nashua (NH), came to Iraq with me to train the Iraqi police, sent me a picture of him in the media, on the streets of Watertown, MASS, wearing the exact same combat gear we had in Iraq, only was a different color."
The way we do things in the military is called "task organization." You take a command and then you attach units to it in order to accomplish the mission. What's happening is, Homeland Security is pre-staging gear, equipment. What they're trying to do is use standardized vehicles, standardized equipment.
I saw a picture in the Boston Globe during the Boston Marathon bombing, where there was a State police officer…actually there were two officers, they both had identical helmets, flak jackets, weapons, everything I wore in Iraq, only it was all blue. The officer on one side had a big patch that said Massachusetts State Police…the other officer next to him…his patch said Boston Police."
I have heard that there may also be a psychological effect to the police using the color black, but I have yet to further explore that topic.

In related news, the Department of Homeland Security has also begun funding a program, beginning with the state of Massachusetts, that standardizes law enforcement ID cards, issued to every sworn officer in the state.

Criminal Police Violate Constitution at DUI Check Point; Use Lies and Fear As Intimidation Tactic

My intention was never to bash cops everyday. I just wanted to learn about the principles of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. But once you begin to learn about these principles, you understand the magnitude of how "anti-freedom" our system really is. You then realize that we can never achieve anything truly revolutionary while we have these men in costumes, driving around everywhere, or having check points, with the ability to violate your most basic human rights, and receive no reprimand for it.

This video is ESSENTIAL to watch, to understand how the criminal police operate. This young man pulls up to a DUI spot check (these are unconstitutional), and attempts to assert his rights. In a disgusting display of immorality, the police then lie, intimidate, false-detain, threaten, and more, in an attempt to strike fear into this man. They even bring the police dogs, TO SCRATCH UP THE GUYS CAR!  Do you understand the level of gangster that police operate at?  They are gang members, gangsters, thugs, criminals, etc. Would your grandparents have stood for this?  Can you imagine what it will be like when your children grow up?  It will only get worse, until we say enough is enough.

While I give massive props to this dude for his effort, I feel he was too soft from the beginning. All that "yes sir" "no sir" bullshit gotta go. These are tyrants, and we need to treat them as such.  I believe he should have asked "Am I being detained?, Am I free to go?" from the beginning, and stood firm, but that is easy for me to say, sitting here watching it, after the fact.  If I have the unfortunate pleasure of going through one of these unconstitutional check points, which I'm sure I will since America is becoming more of a police state everyday, I will surely record the event, because I will resist, and we will see what happens!

Orwellian Talking Surveillance Cameras Become Reality In Mount Vernon, NY

The latest big brother device to bring us closer to the future envisioned by George Orwell, in his book "1984", is surveillance cameras in public places, that record conversations, take video, snap pictures, and shout orders.

Talking cameras installed in dilapidated playgrounds in Mount Vernon, NY.

A local ABC news affiliate in Mount Vernon, NY has reported (video above) on a small community that now has to deal with talking surveillance cameras, that give trespassers the following warning: "Stop! This is a restricted area, and your photograph was just taken! We will use it prosecute you! Leave the area now!"

Each unit cost $6000.  It is important to remember the cost of the devices, as you will most likely see your city/town justifying purchasing these devices, and other big brother, Orwellian, tracking, police state-type devices, while at the same time telling you that they don't have enough money for, and have to cut, public programs that actually help people.

At 1:16 in the video, they interview a gentleman from the neighborhood, inside of the playground that the camera is pointed towards, which looks terrible, who rightfully points out "There's nothing in here, so why you got cameras in here?".

City Councilman Yuhanna Edwards defends the surveillance camera with the typical response that a tyrant gives to people that stick up for their rights, "You hear people say 'Why all these cameras'?  But if you're not doing anything wrong, don't worry about the cameras."

Big Brother Street Lights(Intellistreets) coming to spy on American cities!

The predictive programming for the people to accept these creepy devices has been on going.  Last year, a local news ABC affiliate in Michigan reported on new street lights (video above), called "Intellistreets", that have computer processors inside of them that allow the street lights to "talk" to each other, record conversations, bark orders, and even, according to the news report, "count people for police".

The inventor of this device Ron Harwood, has a company called Illuminating Concepts, and received  "funding help from the Department of Energy" for his Intellistreets design.  The report mentions that because the camera is "capable of recording converastions" that it is "making critics CRY invasion of privacy".  (Sidenote:  The phrase "cry invasion of privacy" tells the listener that people who care about their privacy are like little babies, crying.)

Harwood responds to privacy concerns by assuring the people not to worry because Intellistreets doesn't have "spook technology".  Interestingly, the news report ends with the information that Ron Harwood is working with homeland security!

In the UK, talking surveillance cameras have been shouting orders at people for at least a few years.  In 2007, the BBC reported, "Talking CCTV cameras that tell off people dropping litter or committing anti-social behaviour are to be extended to 20 areas across England."

The following picture is shown on the report as an example of how the talking camera works:

The analysts at the No Agenda Show have been documenting the spread of the big brother surveillance state, including the introduction of giant voice systems that shout commands at people.  I encourage readers to follow their work.

Police Officer Gets Caught On Camera Saying He Will "Make Something Up" To Bring Young Boy To Jail

Listen to this police officer, tell this young kid, that he was going to "make something up" to get the boy in trouble, and tow his car. Listen to the way the cop talks! And yes, this is typical, stop making the "they're not all like that" excuse. All police officers choose to be a part of a gang, that has a "blue-wall" of silence, that forces people into this corrupt justice system, that we all know is bullshit. "Doing their job" means taking peoples freedom away, and filling up the prisons. Police get NO LOVE from me, not a smile, not a "thank you", not a "sir", nothing. Fuck 'em. Lets get free.

UPDATE: Drug-Addicted CT State Trooper Caught On Dash Cam Taking Money From Dead Man

Aaron Huntsman

The arrest warrant has been released in the case of the Connecticut State Trooper stealing money and jewelry from a dead victim of a motorcycle accident.

Connecticut State Trooper Aaron Huntsman is caught on his dash cam video, taking the money of the deceased motorcycle accident victim.  Huntsman also has checked himself into a two-week drug rehabilitation facility, for pain medication.

The arrest warrant alleges, "on 09-22-12 while investigating a fatal accident on Rte 15 in Fairfield, TFC Huntsman knowingly took a large amount of cash that was handed to him by a Fairfield Firefighter while on scene standing at the rear of the ambulance. TFC Huntsman is heard on his cruiser's camera saying that he would take it as evidence. Once TFC Huntsman has the cash in his possession, he is seen walking directly back to his cruiser and gets in the driver's side. TFC Huntsman is contacted on numerous occasions by the deceased's father inquiring about missing money to which TFC Huntsman repeatedly states he didn't see or take money and that it must have gone with the ambulance personnel. When TFC Huntsman is questioned by State Police Supervisors about missing property and money, Huntsman tells them that he actually seized a gold chain belonging to the deceased which was still in his cruiser; however, Huntsman makes no mention of having the gold chain when questioned by the deceased's father about missing property or money the night after the accident. Huntsman tells his supervisors on numerous occasions that he never sees or takes money while at the scene. Throughout the investigation, TF Huntsman tells investigators that he never saw-money or took money while on scene."

Attorney Ment, representing the accused officer, also stated that "Huntsman had checked himself into a substance abuse program and would be there approximately for two weeks...a pain medication type program"

Former NYPD Officer Secretly Records Supervisors Angrily Telling Officers That They Need More Arrests, Revealing Quota System

Adrian Schoolcraft, an eight year veteran formerly of the NYPD, secretly recorded NYPD supervisors giving orders that tickets must be written and arrests must be made or top brass at the NYPD would make it "real difficult" for the officer. He goes on to say that orders were given to harass people so vigorously that they will not even want to step foot outside in fear of being arrested or ticketed.

In the video above, Schoolcraft says he was reprimanded by his bosses because "I wasn't meeting their undocumented quota...the non-quota quota."  He claims people are referred to as "bodies", as the higher ups routinely asks, "how many bodies do I have in the cells".

Schoolcraft was threatened by his supervisors  "They can make it real difficult for you. Ship you off somewhere.",  meaning he will be reassigned for not meeting the quota.  The supervisor continues, "Just keep the hound off, a parker, a 250, you can stop someone walking down the street. You know what, I stopped an asshole once.  I gave him a 250, what's the big deal."

The phrase "gave him a 250" means the supervisor performed the controversial and unconstitutional tactic, stop and frisk (UF-250), on some unassuming "asshole", American citizen.  Stop and frisk violates our fourth amendment natural right, which guards against unreasonable searches and seizures, along with requiring any warrant to be judicially sanctioned and supported by probable cause.  All police officers take an oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States, but few take this oath seriously.

Also, Schoolcraft claims the NYPD even placed him in a psych-ward, in an attempt to discredit him, because he went to internal affairs about corruption he was witnessing within the department, including the downgrading of felonies to misdemeanors.

Adrian Schoolcraft

It gets worse!  In another audio clip secretly recorded, a supervisor is telling the officers, "I want 250's and C summonses.  I want a ghost town. I want to hear an echo from one end of the street to another.  You understand?  That's what I want in a perfect world.  So that's your mission.  You guys need collars, you need activity.  There you go, they got to be removed"

The perfect world for this New York City police supervisor is empty, people-less streets.  Keep in mind that this is not some rookie cop, this is a supervisor, meaning he was at one-time promoted, by someone who agrees with his line of thinking.

The YouTube Channel "NYC Resistance" is constantly capturing video of these NYPD corrupt and unconstitutional practices.  I documented two cases, one where a cop was seemingly excepting bribes, and another where a man got a ticket for spitting on the sidewalk.

We all have to be aware of the police state that is forming.  You have to know that you have "natural rights", and assert them every chance you get.

Connecticut State Trooper Steals Money And Jewelry From Dead Victim Of Motorcycle Accident

John Scalesse, owner of the JAS Masonry, LLC in Milford

John Scalesse (above), a 49-year-old Orange resident, died from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident on the Merritt Parkway in Fairfield around midnight on Saturday morning, Sept. 22, 2012.  Scalesse, the owner of the JAS Masonry, LLC in Milford suffered fatal injuries after his motorcycle crashed into a construction company truck in the northbound lanes of Exit 44 on the Merritt in Fairfield. Scalesse's motorcycle, a 2001 Honda FLSTF, skidded into the rear of the truck about a half mile before the exit, police said.  When family of the accident victim noticed that some of his possessions were missing, they called the state police.  The Scalesse’s family determined that jewelry, clothing and cash were missing — including $3,000 in cash and a gold chain from the victim’s body. Upon investigation, it was determined that no jewelry was logged into evidence. Investigators found Scalesse's clothing at the hospital -- but the other items were missing.   Upon further investigation, a large amount of cash was found in the police cruiser of State Trooper Aaron Huntsman (picture below), who apparently swiped the items as Scalesse lay dying in the ambulance.

Aaron Huntsman, CT State Trooper

Aaron Huntsman, who has since been suspended, was a vice president of the state police union for more than two years.  At the time of the accident, Huntsman was assigned to Troop G barracks in Bridgeport and he earned $111,967 in 2011, state records show, including often working overtime assignment at the front door of the Golden Hill Street courthouse in Bridgeport.

Huntsman was processed and released upon posting a $5,000 bond.  In comparison, when I, Goodman, was arrested for a non-violent, victim-less "crime" of drug possession, marijuana, my bail was set at $75,000.

If Huntsman is convicted and terminated from his state trooper position, he still could apply for his state pension when he is 65. Just how much he would receive is based on a number of factors including his average salary or his highest three years of pay.

He will be arraigned in Bridgeport Superior Court on Dec. 10.

Private Prison Company Used in Drug Raids at Public High School

According to a report by CommonDreams.org, on October 31, 2012, employees of Corrections Corporation of America were used in drug sweeps of public school students in Arizona.

Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) is the largest for-profit, prison detention center operator.  They make a profit, off of inmates.  There has been much controversy over the governments use of private prisons, including a recent story where 8 inmates filed a lawsuit against CCA for letting gangs control their Idaho Correctional Center, in an effort to save money.

In a related story, the owners of two private, for-profit juvenile facilities, in Pennsylvania, were giving kickbacks to a judge, Mark Ciavarella, for sentencing children to extended stays in juvenile detention for offenses as minimal as mocking a principal on Myspace or trespassing in a vacant building.  This scandal became known as "kids-for-cash".

It now looks as if CCA will begin hunting children directly at school.  It's a great business model, if you're a psychopath.

8 Inmates Suing Private Prison Corporation For Letting Gangs Control Jail To Save Money

If you haven't heard yet, America has prisons that are owned by private corporations.  Think about that.  A person, or group of people, are looking at inmates, as profit.  Like a business, they look for new ways to generate profit, and cut expenses.  In the latest case shining light on this shady operation, eight inmates at the Idaho Correctional Center are suing the Corrections Corporation of America, contending the company is working with a few powerful prison gangs to control the facility south of Boise and spend less on staffing.

In another recent story involving private prisons, the owners of two private, for-profit juvenile facilities, in Pennsylvania, were giving kickbacks to a judge, Mark Ciavarella, for sentencing children to extended stays in juvenile detention for offenses as minimal as mocking a principal on Myspace or trespassing in a vacant building.  This scandal became known as "kids-for-cash".  The judge was eventually sentenced to a lengthy prison term, but not before he ruined many children's lives.  In one heartbreaking story, a seventeen year old boy, with no prior record, committed suicide shortly after being released from a private prison that Judge Mark Ciavarella ordered him to be locked up at. The boy's mother angrily confronted Ciavarella after a court appearance.  You can watch the video here:

The two big companies profiting off of private prisons are Corrections Corporation of America, and  The Geo Group Inc.  These two companies have combined revenue of over $3 billion.  These companies spend millions on lobbying federal and state governments, as well as millions in political contributions to candidates.

Over the past 15 years, the number of people held in all prisons in the United States has increased by 49.6 percent, while private prison populations have increased by 353.7 percent, as governments are increasingly looking to privatize their prisons to save money.

Caught On Tape: Woman Suffers Cardiac Arrest After Cop Tasers Her 3 Times During Traffic Stop

The police pull this woman over, get her out the car, want to search her bag, she refuses, she tries to get back in her car, the cops taser her three times, and finally the lady catches a heart attack.  When a toxicology report was taken of this woman, there were no drugs in her system.

As I will continue to show with my work, our justice system is completely unjust.  The police had no right to take this lady out of her car, and no right to search her bag.  So when they are acting illegally, what are you to do?  This lady thought she was in a free country, and almost died because of it.

And why taser this woman?  Did she pose such a great threat, that two grown men could not subdue her with their hands?  Police are given free-reign with these deadly devices, and are beginning to use them more frequently.  Cops are too comfortable with these tazers on their side.  Last week I reported how a police officer tasered a ten year old boy after the child refused to clean the officers car.  Locally, last month the The Republican American reported the town of Watertown, CT spending $25,000 to ensure every cop has a taser.

Tobacco Smokers May Soon Be Required To Pay For A “Smoker’s License” In Order To Continue Buying Cigarettes

CBS reports, a leading tobacco control advocate, Simon Chapman, a professor at the University of Sydney, "proposes that users would have to apply and pay for a mandatory license in the form of a smartcard that would be shown when buying cigarettes...the smartcard would allow the government to limit how many cigarettes a smoker could buy."

I am not a tobacco user, however I am completely against this.  Government is not daddy, it needs to stop telling people how to live their lives.  In New York City, the government regulates the size soda you can buy, and how much salt you can put on your food.  You have to really stop and think about what kind of person sits back and thinks about how to control OTHER people. I have been to Public Health meetings and have witnessed public "officials" with these psychopathic traits, proposing ridiculous new ways to control other peoples lives.  We all need to be down at our local board meetings keeping these people in check.

Cop Chokes Six Year Old Boy, Prosecutor Won't File Charges

Chicago Police Officer Tony Baumann walked in on his six year old step-son "playing doctor" with the cop's five year old daughter.  Officer Baumann, who's 6'2'' and weighs over 300 pounds, flipped out, struck the child several times, and threw the boy on the bed by his neck. The boy's mother, Vicki Ross, is "at her wits end" after learning there will be no charges filed against her ex-fiance.  She believes no charges were filed against Baumann because he is a police officer.  (My Fox Chicago link - with video interview)

Do you believe the cop was justified in his actions?

Corruption, Insider Deals & Shakedowns -- Just Another Day As A NYPD Officer

NYC Resistance is a YouTube channel run by a man who goes around exposing the corrupt practices of the New York Police Department.  In the past two days, NYC Resistance has posted two videos exposing the NYPD.

In the first one, narrating, this man shows how people in parts of New York City are forced to wait hours to get gas, however, the police officer that is stationed at this particular gas station, is making deals with certain motorists, and letting them skip the line.
